How to create a mood board for your living space

Decorating a bedroom, living space or kitchen involves choosing and matching different materials in numerous colours and textures. It might include your existing furniture, curtains, or new flooring.

A mood board is a type of collage consisting of images, text, and samples of objects. To make the best design decisions possible, a mood board will help you visualise what you like and don’t like.

How to get started

To get started, you’ll need a scrapbook, corkboard or large sheet of butchers paper. You might also want some glue, paper clips and pens.

Pull together images from catalogues or magazines, material samples, such as carpet, tile or vinyl swatches, any fabrics you like or paint colour swatches from your local hardware store.

Spread the images and samples out on a table and play around with what looks good. Then, paste, clip and arrange them in your scrapbook or sheet of paper.

Sometimes it’s easiest to start with something big like a wall paint colour or flooring you like e.g. a grey textured carpet. With hundreds of samples, we can get you started.
